Interestingly, Pokemon training is a notable exception. Gym leaders and Elite Four members are fairly evenly split between men and women. This makes sense, actually, because elite Trainers would have plenty of experience with Pokemon and know that, aside from some sex-restricted evolutions, whether a Pokemon is male or female has no bearing on their ability. Your Blaziken won't tank a Surf any better because the foe's Milotic is a female rather than a male.
