He understood his blade wasn't a weapon to kill, but a tool to protect. He finally understood why X put himself on the line for humans, and even met "mavericks" who were his mirror, showing what could've happened if he let his desires take a hold of him.
Him striking down Weil, even when it was a human, proved that if the threat is bigger, he won't stop. He saw an enemy, and he stopped it.
Zero is awesome, and earned his rest.
