No other game has sold that amount on its own. RGB did sell 31m, but split between 3 versions leaves it hanging at 10m average. And it was a burner game released in January to boot.

Part of what drove RG/B's popularity was having to buy one or the other and if your mate got one, you kinda having to get the other to "catch them all" unless there was a big social circle (only other teenager I knew played red like me back in the day bought red too). And since pokémania died off hard after GS' release you can't say they'd have sold an easy 16m when part of their initial crazy numbers was having to buy one or the other to trade with friends for shit you didn't have (you also needed G1 games to get the legends from Kanto as they were gone three years later).
Take out the whole driving force of needing to buy a second copy to trade for version exclusives and you lost a chunk of selling power because no-one's going to buy two and endlessly reset the off-copy to get the trades like Tajiri had envisioned with a randomiser setting encounters at game start.

Maybe because I'm not looking for headlines about how many copies a game sells as I'm not investing in fucking gaming stocks of all things? So far there's been a sales dropoff for the secondary gen released on the Gameboy and both of the DS iterations, so I was surprised to see that's apparently not the case for Gen 9.

Yeah, that's the thing. Past metrics go out the fucking window when they re-invigorate the series. Just look at Zelda, cull the afterbirth-style of making games, go back to open world (only this time after the world's started moving towards OW), sell the most copies of any Zelda in history as well as finally selling Japan wholesale on the IP. If you weren't so fucking young, you'd have been aware of this potential outcome going into launch. Sadly, you were an ignorant doomer retard too intent on pushing a narrative.

Anon, the lion's share of the audience is kids. We know it's kids because on the 2nd best selling video game console in history Pokémon only hit 17.67m, getting beaten into 5th all-time for the system despite top-scoring on GBA with less and being runner up on 3DS with less again. It's only started selling numbers like it did on Game Boy, again a handheld people had largely abandoned (or had an old brick kicking about to see what the fuss was and given they lost 8m to GS, looks like that was the case). There's more kids than adults interacting with this and always has been.
