GSC was the height of Pokemania. It was Ruby Sapphire Emerald when a legitimate decline happened and that was mostly just due to franchise fatigue

Red and Blue is only the peak of soul because it's the only one that wasn't excessively micromanaged and had no real standards to meet. G/S was doomed by executives demanding simpler, cuter designs, Gen 3 was doomed by GF intentionally going to the opposite extreme alongside deciding to be a reboot and truly making "the formula, and then every game after that copies Gen 3 basically to the letter in basically every aspect down to the dexes.

Normies have short attention spans and it has only gotten shorter. "Pokemania" in 2016 with Go lasted like a month. Today, it'd last a week or less. Look at game releases, people stop talking about the most hyped shit in a week no matter how much it sells.

It was the very end of it, what are you talking about?
By the time of crystal people were already moving on to new fads like yugioh and Beyblade, it didn't help that franchise fatigue set in around that time either because of how similar the games were to gen 1 which had 4 games mind you. There was a steep drop in sales and viewer retention between the start of gen 2 and the end of it.

RSE basically cemented it as a full on franchise and not a 90s fad.

Plus the only thing that was marketed as "different" was that it had a girl in it. Girls weren't interested in Gameboy games in those days.
By the time it was out, boys had already completed Gold and Silver and didn't really care about crystal.
