On my last playthrough I had a team of 4 level 55s for Red, before using the 19 Rare Candies hidden throughout the game. The person in OP's pic is definitely overleveled

Red is optional, and it's an NPC fight so if you want to raise all 6 Pokemon without grinding you can totally do that and just spam the tools the game gives you when the time comes (X attack/speed/etc. items). Nobody in any way, shape, or form is forcing you to fight Red much less prepare for him beyond that; he's just a fun little surprise challenge at the top of Mt. Silver and shit like that and Steven Stone are sorely missing from the games these days. The battle facility is a different beast .

Every argument involving this post-game content quickly becomes retarded for no reason

Because you might want to try out/use Pokemon other than those? You're free to just stick to 4 but honestly 6 hasn't been enough for me in recent games, I went through about ~10 Pokemon total from BW2 onward. As shitty as everything after that point has been they have been very good about keeping a variety available even from the first two routes

Unlikely to one shot Blastoise or Lapras before getting one shot itself.
Pikachu aside, Red really does have a better balanced team than Lance, in part because the team doesn't die to a single type like over half of Lance's team does.
