Smogon on itself is just one of dozens of Pokemon fan websites and closing it will open precedent that may or may not end with collapse of online presence of Pokemon.

And Pokemon Showdown? It's completely open source and closing main servers will end with half a dozen of other servers growing in size till people will jump on most popular one.

sometumes i wonder why wont other just make their own version of Showdown that runs a totally different ruleset than Smogon if they don't like how Smogon runs the meta that much. i'd like to see a strictly VCG showdown server, or even a server that adjusts skills,abilites, and items for the sake of balance.

But they know that it's the reason why so many people are into VGC so they're letting them off if they just follow couple of rules (one of them was not having Hisuian Pokemon until SV)
One of the Showdown developers confirmed the relationship between TPCi and Smogon like 1-2 years ago
