Some say that XY has an immense, enormous, immeasurable amount of "scrapped potential." I wonder, what scrapped potential? Improving Lysandre a little, a copy of Cyrus, wasn't going to be a substantial change. Cyrus improved a bit in Platinum and is still a forgettable villain. Why would the copy be better? I think the same about the other characters. I can only imagine a little better Gym Leaders, but nothing substantial. XY began a change in philosophy that was to attract the casual public. Surely Pokémon Z was going to increase the references to Kanto and other regions, and it was going to give us a Mega Hoenn Starter (Mega Kanto Starter + Mega Lucario + Mega Hoenn Starter). Has any game from the 3D era been super cool? most would say ORAS, but it's still a significant downgrade from Emerald, even today I'd rather play RS than ORAS.

We don't know, which is part of the reason there's so much interest around it. All we know is there are some major hooks for a Z version and that it could potentially have been like the gen 3-5 3rd versions which add significant amount of content, or it could have been ULTRA CHANGES like we got a gen later. Because of the mystery, it has intrigue.

It's more about Kalos' story and lore being incomplete. Zygarde 100% form was supposed to awaken when Kalos is threatened but it ended up being shoehorned into Alola, and whatever they planned for Eternal Floette is still a mystery. That and hints of other areas being accessible plus things like Mega Latis being in the code before ORAS, the whole game is intriguing.

Tried to coordinate with irl friends but we never managed to make it work unless we were meeting up anyways so we always battled in person. Friend codes were just clunky because of how few you could store and you had to register on both ends instead of simply sending/accepting a friend request plus it was game specific instead of console. And if memory serves it would fail if the trainer name was incorrect, but I could be misremembering that because it was like 15 years ago.
