I think Clemont and his little sister make it lamer than it otherwise would be

Also the dex was so small and bereft of quality that Ash's team suffered for it; what they gave him was literally the best they could do with just Kalos mons, I checked myself to see if I could fix it and you just can't given Ash's personality and importance in the story---nothing else fits

Also he lost and that killed the whole thing

I recently picked up CD copies of Volt, Mega Volt, and Daybreak Meteor Shower (M17 ED), adding to my copies of Getta Ban Ban, XY&Z Character Song Project Vols. 1-2, DoriDori, and Mailing Out My Voice (M19 ED). I don't know if I'm as big a fan of the other songs, but if I ever get in the mood for them, then all that's missing are Let's Dance with Pokémon, Roaring All-Stars, and Tweedia.

Gen 6 was the last time I truly enjoyed Pokemon as a franchise as a whole.
I really miss livewatching the anime episodes and trading and battling all day every day on the PSS.
In my opinion, absolutely everything that's gone wrong with this franchise has its roots in no Z being made and not letting Ash win the Kalos League. Call me a schizo, but that's my honest and sincere opinion.
I really want to go back.

You're not wrong. The obviously planned additional Kalos games getting scrapped to rush SM out for the anniversary hurt the goodwill towards the games hard, and everything about the SM and PM2019 shows was so misguided it hurt. Not to mention the painfully pathetic Yokai Watchisms that were all over the franchise during Gen 7.

At least the anime sort of managed to recover by scrapping literally everything and restarting from scratch with an all new cast.

It is, quite literally, inferiority complex. There was never anywhere near the same amount of hype and excitement around SM and JN as there was around XY, not even close - even though those series are the ones with "bigger" events happening. Which is what generated discourse about "XYfags" and whatever, even though the reception of the Liko anime is also much better than either SM or JN. XY just had a magic that the series that followed couldn't really duplicate (though apparently the Liko one is good too, should catch up to it).

The new series is good, but the fact that it started all over from scratch obviously means it doesn't have the kind of history that contributed to why XY generated so much hype. I think the Kalos loss also kinda permanently scarred a lot of fans and makes it hard for them to truly get as invested as they were back then.

But it's definitely good, and has brought back a lot of fans that dropped the series either right after XY or during one of the disappointing series that followed it.

The Liko anime is also getting attacked for the same reason. The people that grew up on SM and PM19 are in general a very angry and bitter group that lash out at everything that's better liked than "their" shows.

I purposely avoid dumb anime drama, but I have to say, I don't think I've ever seen such a clear-cut case of inferiority complex among XY haters in any other fanbase. Here's a fun fact: Apparently the most expensive episode of XY to produce was one of the Serena showcase episodes, because of the multiple layers of animation, 2D and 3D, that were required, plus other visual effects. I don't remember which, but I think it was one of the Master Class ones.

I feel like Gen VI could have salvaged the disaster that was Gen V, but alongside no Z Version and Ash losing the Kalos League, was ORAS being weak, and XY already being flawed as it was.

Gen VII was just the nail in the coffin; late Gen VI already showed things might not turn around after all.

People focus on Amour a lot just because it was the two MCs, but XY was doing it with multiple characters. AshxSerena, AlainxMairin, ViolaxGrant, Sycamore hitting on Diantha, Miette's dynamic with Ash and Serena, Bonnie proposing to every girl she could find on Clemont's behalf. Romance was obviously an intended theme in XY's DNA which makes sense because I think Masuda said that was the point when they set the games in France; they wanted to do some romance teases.
