Unfortunately, do not expect to them to get any better. Most are either badly made or unfair bullshit. Also yeah, for some reason Ribombee's moveset is broken. It can also learn a lot of busted moves like ice beam and thunderbolt.

I like Insurgence. It's edgy, but silly edgy for the most part and while its harder than an official game even with a pretty optimized team I was able to pull through the tough fights with a few move changes (like picking up taunt or roar) at most.
I got a little bit into Desolation, and it has some polish but feels like it takes itself a bit too seriously.

Which one? It's pretty hard to say who took the cake with the "hmphs", characters like Amelia funnily enough said "hmph" at the start of almost every sentence, Shiv came close I think, Baron as well started LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE WITH "Hmph", but he thankfully wasn't as present throughout the game as the foxy yakuza.

Likewise, Desolation is the only Reborn-like that I will say without a doubt I really love, even with the problems that it has like the shit mapping, crappy pacing and lack of polish in certain areas, it's cast of characters are genuinely likeable all around except for Baron and Jared but you're meant to hate Baron and be scared shitless of the wataer schizo, so it works very well.

Decent story, good music, and cozy region that actually feels worth saving when the atomic disasters start to happen, but a little bit incomplete around the edges (mostly noticeable with the fact that the post-game was never implemented) due to getting fucked over by Nintendo, and the quality of the fakemon is quite inconsistent, though it has quite a few I absolutely love. Gameplay is mostly solid, but can require a bit of grinding in some places. OP professed navigation problems I didn't experience.

I think I mentioned this earlier, but I really appreciate the sprite work in this game. Some of the overworld scenes are really nicely done, like the scene with Evil Mother going for the hugs or this one here, or just little things like Bea's sprite eyes lighting up when she looks crazy.

Yeah, it's been good. I've been slowly building my team rather than going for a full straight away, and have felt just right on the curve for most of the game. I got a tiny bit ahead after the 3rd gym, but just turned the Exp Share off for a couple routes and now I'm back to equal or a level or so lower than most fights now.

The idea of the starters being different carnival performers was fine conceptually, but Quaquaval came out HORRIBLY over-designed. Way worse than Skeledirge and Skeledirge is already over-designed. This funny enough leaves Meowscarada as the by-default winner among the gen 9 starters despite the fact that it's another thoroughly unsubtle fur-bait.

Skelerdige would have been fine with it's base inspirations of the Cuca and the other Spanish folklore crocodile monster I'm blanking on the name and Dia de Los Muertos, but instead gamefreak make it look hideously overdone with a face that's meant to represent a stage, a bizarre mouth that's far too cartoony and ironically underdesigned compared to the rest of the Pokemon, a bizarrely shaped body that's supposed to mirror an instrument, a flame decal on the head that makes it look like a bald clown, only the bird spirit was well enough executed, I still like Skeledirge but it's design is just bleh, Quaquaval was just straight up a mistake and I REALLY dislike Meowscarada.
The idea of carnival based set of starters isn't even a bad idea like you said, but it was done so terribly.

I don't entirely blame you. Not even my lesbian friend who flicks it to Braixen every day (no joke) likes Meows. Just like I said - default winner by dint of not being so over-designed that it doesn't even look like a Pokemon anymore. People throw the "doesn't look like a Pokemon" charge around a lot, but prior to gen 9 I really didn't have any cause to level it myself - at least not against any of the starters. Say what you like about Inteleon - still has a sufficiently straightforward and readable design as to not look blatantly un-Pokemon-like at least. But here? Nah, man. Quaq and Skele don't even look like Digimon either (which is another common charge), they just look... bad...
