Physical is usually good for unga bunga damage, while Special has always been good for coverage. Honestly it depends on the metagame.

special has better moves e.g. some types only work with special moves like electric fire ice
physical types tend to be more effective e.g. ground and fighting and I think on average defense is lower than special defense. special attackers also have to confront blissey while physical wallbreakers can deal with skarmory corviknight etc.
