In recent Pokemon games, Game Freak seems obsessed with random food items and shoehorning them into the game’s writing.
In Gen 3 and Gen 4 they introduced Pokeblocks and Poffins, sure, but they were items relegated to side-modes like Contests. The most relevance either had was evolving a Feebas. But starting in Gen 7 “regional food” began becoming almost obnoxious.
However, Hau’s “DUDE MASALADAS LMAO” and Sword and Shield’s Curry could at least be excused as being foods actually associated with the region meant to give you the experience of trying new food while visiting a new country.
What bothers me most of all is Gen 9 being so centered around SANDWICHES. Sandwiches aren’t even from Spain/Iberia. They were invented in England. And yet an entire story arc, 7/8 of the title Legendary’s personality, and a great deal of the game’s writing is built on Sandwiches. Did a Snorlax start writing at some point? Does Gamefreak starve their employees? It pisses me off.
