I'm baffled by what zoomers complain about in video games. like the pokemon games I had as a kid didn't have much more for animation than pokeballs wobbling and two sprite flower overworld animation. now if they see a frame skip, whatever the hell that is, they decide an entire game is dogshit, as if some of the best games in the world weren't buggy crash prone indie games.

you want to know what makes for a good game? content and gameplay. I've found that at a decent level in every single pokemon game and have been able to enjoy them all.

This is very rarely an actual issue. That video is obviously an edge case, and even then isn't a big deal. It's a valid complaint, but people make a much bigger deal out of it than it actually is.

It's a huge fucking problem in Platinum's Battle Frontier. I don't remember if they sped things up for HGSS, but high-level battles in Platinum take ages, especially when you're doing the Open Battle Factory.

I was 14 in 2006, and I can tell you with vivid memory that the only people playing pokemon at that time who were as old as me were the obese fedoralord giga dweebs, literally wearing fedoras because it was 2006, taking up the coolest spot in the lunchroom because nobody wanted to be around them. their fat greasy hands held nintendo DSes which looked very immature even to my dumb shitestained little ass and they were probably having a really good time playing good pokemon games. normal teenage boys were playing PS2 and 360, properly marketed for our age group.

Ignoring that you cherrypicked the one thing Platinum does faster (transitions into and out of battle) rather than the actual problem (updates to EXP and HP are way, WAY too slow), a lot of the complaints come from the fact that the games cutscenes are agonizingly slow and poorly scripted.

You're interrupted constantly, and often for tutorials you probably don't want. If a music change happens at the end of a scene, you're locked in place until it fades back out. Most scenes have an ungodly amount of text boxes to say very little, which makes even mashing take longer than it should. You get dragged around way too often.

It's insane how much faster the game goes if you just turn all the cutscene triggers off.

The complaint isn't just about the fighting. OP is using Platinum which speeds up the game substantially but even it has issues. Gen 4 is slow, movement speed, saving a lot of data, HP speed, battle effects/weather, the overreliance on HMs meaning you constantly interrupt forward progress with text boxes asking you if you want to use the HM, etc. It all adds up.

I think the reduced spring speed of Gen 4 was kind of nice, actually. Better fit the pace of the games than Gen 3's run speed.

Other than that, I agree with you. Sinnoh is cool, but it's HM Hell.

also worth nothing that the more you progress in the game, the slower it gets because of the HP pools/Exp. Gain getting larger and the increasingly large amount of story/HM obstacles meaning that eventually you're spending more time waiting for some text or HP bar to finish than you are actually playing the game

Don’t forget the slow scroll speed when using the bag where if you want to go faster you have to use the scroll wheel on the touch screen which is STILL slower than pressing select to move items.

This is so funny because it's clearly a technical problem they just never fixed. It's trying to load the bag sprite for every item you scroll past, but it doesn't do that if you press select first, which is why that scrolls at a reasonable speed.

Every single time Lucas or Dawn talks, the game checks your player gender value, does two if checks, and then jumps to a custom function that pulls their line from the script before jumping to the next function.

I've gone through event scripts up to the second gym and have seen maybe three calls. Ever. It's ALL JumpIf on a kudzu spread of functions.

No. In almost every case, this shit is actually three functions down a chain of functions, not in the script.
Every single one is manually written to bit 0x800C. Then they write out in plain text to check if the bit is 0 or 1. And then manually write out the next action this leads to, which is almost always another function that then leads to another, shared function.

THIS IS WHY YES/NO USUALLY LEADS TO THE SAME RESULT IN THESE GAMES.

I should also mention one of the only times I saw a Call used, it was because the function had to be done several times to randomize several items.

They listed "Call Function 92" like six times in a row. They couldn't even figure out that you could just have it repeat until it matched an iterative value in a while loop. They just kept copy pasting the Call.

I found this stuff using a tool that extracts NDS files into archives and has a GUI that makes it easier to parse. The scripts were extracted directly from the ROM.

The slow reduction in HP starts being a problem when mons start approaching triple-digit HP which is around the 5th~6th gym. The Blissey video just shows the worst possible case scenario. As far as I know, the slow HP drain was actually a bug that just required a single fix in the code to make HP drain as fast as RSE
