I didn’t know the concept of an HM slave until I was 12 and playing DP. Sure, they weren’t leveled autistically evenly like I do now, but they were within 5-6 levels of one another. It isn’t difficult to understand having a rounded team to deal with type matchups, especially having watched the anime.
And as a side note, in my many replays of Hoenn and Sinnoh growing up, I tried playing both with and without the HM slave tactic, and I just never liked doing it.
