Rivals peaked with Barry. He's your friend but still wants to kick your ass, has a strong team and good character development. Also he (and Blue) are the only ones who beat their respective leagues.

they're both fine. unfortunately, hop is a very late rival and the whole concept was run into the ground by gen 5. not exactly his fault, but no rivals since have really felt unique or even important.

at least Barry has a personality, it's not a good personality but it's something, i can at least buy that I'd be friends with him. I'm playing shield for the first time and hop is just as bad as I thought he'd be, I've never heard someone say "rival" more than hop, a good rival doesn't need to constantly reiterate that he's your rival. most of the interactions with him are exactly the same, hop shows up brags about getting his badge before me then he runs off to wait on the next route to battle me, he says some shit like "wow you really studied type disadvantages", I beat him and he says "I expected nothing less from my rival!". rinse and repeat for I think 3 badges until bede beats his ass once and hop takes wooloo off his team.

Hop has a batter character arc but it’s fucking annoying that you battle him 10 times but there’s only 4 Bedes and 3 Marnies IIRC
Nemona is outright obsessed with battling you but she has less battles than Hop

The brand of friendly rivals from Gen VI onwards suck. It should feel satisfying to beat up the rival, not boring because they're constantly sucking you off. Nemona is the same, how are we even rivals with her if she's already done everything and never even uses her real team with us?
