If there was a key item needed for completion of the game that required you show a NPC a Pokémon how would that harm you? It would be very easy to accomplish via the internet.

It would be the ultimate filter to weed out anti trading plebians.

What about children without access to the internet? Or people who don't want to pay for Nintendo Online? Like, it's fine to have a rare Pokemon locked behind trading to encourage trading, but just beating the single player campaign should be possible taking a version 1.0 cartridge out of the box and playing it with no updates or internet connection.

But what does forced trading add to the game other than pointless busywork? Like, you're playing the game, then in order to continue you have to stop and catch a level 2 shitmon on Route 1, save, quit, open Home, move the shitmon to Home, close Home, get out your phone, post the shitmon to the GTS, wait for someone to trade for it, then open Home on your Switch and move traded Pokemon back to your game. If the goal is to teach players that traded Pokemon get more experience, why not do what earlier gens did and have some in game trades in early towns for Pokemon the player would most likely have already caught?

Cutting off the entire stem of being able to go through a single playthrough with your own power and your own power alone is not a good design choice. Also, since they're encouraging players to play old games, what of players who play the games after Internet support is gone and many have moved on to two gens after?

Would you say the same thing about having the Dream World be mandatory in Gen V? They really could - and I imagine that was how Zoroark would have evolved until they decided it was a stupid decision.
