Only thing they did wrong was omitting the lush arsonists and wifebeaters tumbling over the stage to bash the 11 year old protag's head in whenever they beat a gym leader

For me, it's fighting Cynthia for the first time. Even if I'm never gonna replay Sinnoh again (Slow as molasses, geodudes everywhere, new shitty meme HMs that require at minimum 2 slaves in your party, epic funny snow/crud and sludge that you have to wiggle around for 5 seconds to get out of every 20 steps), that feeling of getting my shit utterly kicked in was great.

Yeah, while mechanically the gyms were often a let down, especially being hardcoded to save their ace for the end, the atmosphere with the crowds and chanting picking up for the climax was great. I liked the uniforms, numbers and trainer cards a lot too.

I really enjoyed the part when gen 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 finally ended. Definitely the highlight of those games.

This, sorta. The execution may be lacking, but the idea of the setting where the League is a big sporting event is great.
It makes perfect sense that the thing the world revolves around, Pokemon, would be a big deal, instead of you going to some dinky gym on a remote island with 2 guys and 5 trees inhabiting it.
