Instead the pokemon are all ugly as fuck clones of kanto pokemon

Well yes, Kalos pandering to Kanto was blatant and out of proportion. Unova references all the past regions relatively evenly.

No it was the Gen 7 as that was the first game to have major gameplay differences and lack the full National Dex meaning that not every Pokemon in that Gen needed to be in each game; we had exclusive forms in the past but Gen 7 was the first time entire species could be left out and this was cemented further with LGPE.
Gen 5 was peak and Gen 6 is massively underpolished compared to it. XY doesn't get a free pass just for being the bare minimum when everything after was worse.

Discord post. There's no blatant Kanto pandering in Kalso beyond a couple of mechanical references. You don't understand what pandering is and I suggest you play SM/USUM/SWSH where it's hard to even go three seconds without it being shoehorned into a random sentence.
Unova was definitely the sweet spot though.

I actually played that game and worst nostalgia pandering that game got is Gigantamax Pokemon and Leon's Charizard, which is still better than nostalgia pandering in the Alola games.

I know it's difficult to not shut your brain off entirely when playing SWSH but if you neglect that crucial step in it you'll see they pander to it just as much if not more.

The Galar and Alola games are filled to the brim with useless pandering like this, and yet the Discord raiders only ever seem to focus on something natural like Snorlax blocking a bridge or the structural integrity of the Pokemon league somehow being Kanto pandering. They're not.

A French Forest magically having the exact same layout as a Japanese one. Pidgey being a mandatory first encounter. Snorlaxes magically having an affinity for sleeping on bridges. Mewtwo magically having an affinity to stand in caves. Kanto starters being handed out for no apparent reason. Kanto pokemon being magically more prone to mega evolving. Pure coincidence dictating that you can only catch Kanto Legendaries in postgames. None of these can be lore explained in a way that accomplishes worldbuilding; only explained through the lens of “they wanted you to feel nostalgia”.

This one is fine because it utilizes the already established Pokeflute to reference an older moment while using that as a story element to explain the castle / palace disparity at that point of the game.

This is also good because it continues the Mewtwo lore and makes it more interesting by having it go to the Pokemon village. The village being a place where hurt Pokemon go makes it a great fit for Mewtwo and ultimately makes the place more interesting as a whole.
