The same reason why you can't just attack it and catch it without the flute, despite sleep status being a thing. The devs just did what they wanted and trying to apply any reason or logic to Pokemon is a mistake.

It's been a really long time but was it explained why the Snorlax needed a very specific thing to wake it up? How about a berry? That could work since Snorlax are greedy fatfucks. What about attacking it?

when I was 7 I got past the marowak ghost with a poke doll. I thought this was the solution to the puzzle until I was a teenager. sometimes being high IQ works in old pokemon games.

The Snorlax wanted to sleep. If you woke it up with an item, it would just go back to sleep. But it hates the sound of the Poké Flute so when you play it, Snorlax gets angry and attacks you.

I mean, my logic is Awakening is a medicine made to counter the numerous neuro toxins and other junk that causes the sleep in a Pokemon FROM a Pokemon. Snorlax is naturally a sleep, not even from using rest, so awakening doesn't work.

Berries didn't exist in gen 1

I'd imagine the only reason the poke flute works is because the noise pisses the Snorlax off. If you used an Awakening he'd just go back to sleep again.

I feel this it wasn't sleeping. This Snorlax just felt like an absolute cunt today and decided to make it everyone's problem. Then you earrape it with a horrid flute and gets mad.
