Let's not pretend that doing some random thing to get to Saffron early is a good example of non-linear gameplay.

I don't think "linearity" is that big of a problem. Sword and Shield wouldn't be improved by allowing the player to do gyms out of order. Scarlet and Violet were totally non-linear and it was maybe one of the least interesting gym challenges we've had so far in a Pokemon game.

I'd say the bigger issue with player agency is just NPCs basically holding your hand and telling you where to go through the whole game, which I think is what the original pic was getting at before it got derailed by the stupid Saffron conversation.

It's a stupid example because the game has plenty of examples for that even without having to do extra steps that were design oversights.

It absolutely would. They could have made the Wild Area at least serve as a hub to do them based on your starter choice and, you know, actually make it open world like they advertised?
Instead the Wild Area was just as linear and restrictive as any of the routes.

Except trading a Cut mon in isn't 'beating the game'. The person accepting the trade still has to win the Gym badges and beat the E4 themselves.

kanto isn't even that nonlinear when you think about it. yeah, you can do the gyms out of order, but how much does that really impact your experience? skipping surge doesn't change anything about going through rock tunnel, it's still rock tunnel. you're still going to celadon.
the only meaningful example of doing things out of order in RBY is after you do pokemon tower and you get to decide whether you wanna do silph co. first or go through fuschia and cinnabar.

I probably could have been more specific. If you keep Sword and Shield exactly as is, except now you can skip gyms and return to them later, it wouldn't really improve the game. There's still an intended path through the game, and choosing to deviate from it doesn't make the game that much more impressive. (Basically the same as the Saffron skip in Kanto.)

Of course, if you, like, actually redesign Sword and Shield and change the Wild Area to be more open, then I agree it would make the game better
