There is no functional difference between HMs and the replacement systems like pokeride or BDSP and LGPE's alternatives. In fact, the alternatives are better because they get the same job done without sabotaging team options for no reason.

There is a functional difference. Sinnoh has a ton of items hidden behind Cut trees well into the game. In BDSP, they're little more than an added button press because you're always guaranteed to have a random wild Bibarel to cut things for you. The older games made you give up a move slot for Cut.

Metroidvanias are defined by the items you collect giving you progression in terms of power and exploration. Pokemon is a monster catching franchise where there is no fixed set of monsters you have to use to progress, it is not a fucking metroidvania nor has it ever been.
