Pic rel was the team I bred for my Black playthrough, all fully EV trained because I'm a turbo autist, and there was hardly ever a point where I was over levelled, and I battled every trainer I saw to complete areas; 4 of my 6 were traded (so I could breed for shinies to play with) so they had the boosted exp, too. Sure my team was kinda shitter-tier but that's never really mattered in a Pokemon game. Yea important trainers could have more Pokemon, but keeping in mind Pokemon's core audience, this felt more than enough.
Gen 5 is just fine so long as you're not letting your starter soak up all of the exp, which you'll eventually be punished for due to how the exp system was changed.
