>XY/ORAS
Feels like a continuation of the 2D games design philosophy with updated graphics and systems. I don’t mind this personally, because I like the old style of game map design and Kalos has unique gimmicks for most of its cities and biomes. Game Freak has struggled to make fully open world maps that look good and run properly, and I think they may have just been more comfortable with the older style and its more limited scope. Even in Lets Go the maps were nicely remade and all of the art is good.
XYORAS Battle System was probably favorite of them, and it was complimented by great multiplayer community in the PSS and Streetpass stuff.

Real time interaction with the setting is a good innovation for 3D Pokemon, and the story premise of teaching people about Pokémon through research is refreshing. Basically where I expected Pokemon to go after XY/ORAS. Biggest problem to me is mostly the world map. It looks muddy and unfinished, like they tried to go for something as painterly as BotW without the same level of quality.
>SM
Easily the nicest cast of characters in the series. But the game is so invested in them, that it becomes a chore to play. People often cite “Cutscenes”, but I don’t mind them and I even like the story. It’s the Rotom flags and roadblocks that make Alola feel fake. Like there is nothing to do but follow Kukui or Lillie down the street. This was less a problem in XY because your sidekicks usually linger in the background during routes and dungeons.
Many SM actions feel much slower too. Like pressing A to open fences/doors, going to the Festival hub for multiplayer actions, the fps during Totem bosses, or the PC not being as smooth. Though these are mostly minor annoyances.
