the only successfully unnerving cosmic horror we've gotten to date is still arceus, the others... how do i put it... they're trying too hard? all of them seem powerful and all, but arceus has always had this eerie aura around it, like no matter what game it is it never feels like you should be in its presence. the sound design and setpieces really sell it of course, and that piercing gaze...

The parts with normal, real world imagery tone down the rest, followed by stuff like cells and flesh, it gives it you the feeling of this not being a "cosmic" thing, but an "everything" thing.
Be big or small, rare or mundane, ground or sky, celular or universal level, it's all covered by Arceus. It doesn't show you the horrors of the universe, it shows you its life.

Pokémon really blew their load with arceus didn't they? if it were made today it probably would've gotten the eternamax treatment, you'd battle it once but you will never get your hands on it legitimately cause it would break the game

in PLA they handled it basically identically to how it was handled in DPPt, although in all fairness that's probably BECAUSE DPPt handled it so well and there was no need to change anything. if they weren't working from a blueprint i'm sure they would have played up the spectacle and played down the creepiness, even in a game that handles its tone as well as PLA does.
it'd probably also not look half as alien despite trying twice as hard. this is a direct eternatus diss.
