They went omnicidally insane after absorbing the Blue and Red Orbs and succumbing to their power, and their own power emission created a pocket dimension that would rapidly kill both. This dimension was invaded by a Team Galactic admin named Sird, who offered the two an enchanted suit of armor that can stop time for its occupant, and an enchanted sword that can repel any energy. However, she only had one, so she proposed they fight and kill each other, and she'd give the armor and sword to the winner.
Archie then killed Maxie, and took the armor and sword, calling himself "Guile Hideout", looking to use Jirachi's power to create an artificial Kyogre so he could continue his plan. He fought and was defeated by Gold/Ethan, who destroyed his armor, causing him to wither and fade away into nothingness.
As it turned out, both Archie and Maxie's souls were sent to the Distortion World after, where the two souls mixed and blended together, until they really couldn't tell themselves apart. They heard a mysterious voice calling them to save Hoenn, and were pulled out into the waking world as their ORAS selves, each in the other's body. After their time was up, they withered and faded away again.
