Horizons was fucking sweet in the first 6 eps, but it's safe to say that they didn't plan this shit out at all. Now it's just as bad as the average anipoke series with the added negative trait of failing to deliver on the story it set up. I think we're witnessing the proverbial train crash in this arc, but it was speeding towards this outcome since the moment Liko got hypnotized.

I gotta wonder if the writers were trying to be clever with Anne vs Liko with how Anne was shown to be the active, open and energetic type who was shown to even enjoy battle and captured a second Pokémon first while Liko was the passive, reserved and shy type who didn’t even consider catching a second Pokémon and didn’t even know what she wanted to do as a trainer until after she got to Galar. Yet between the 2, Liko is the protagonist acting as a subversion to the expectations of what a protagonist is.

Keldeo Movie...I think there was a good movie here. They did well by removing TRio entirely from the movie altogether- but I think it'd have worked even better if they removed the human characters entirely. The main character of this movie is Keldeo and Ash once again only really functions as a cheerleader/therapist. Perhaps that's the problem with mid to late Ash. He was a lot like Loki- there to bring out the best in everyone with himself resigned to jobbing and team resets. As for Iris and Cilan? You'd barely remember they were the MCs of this generation with how this and the last movie treated them.

Getting back to the topic. This is a role you could have filled with Virizion. Have here be there to re-assure or encourage Keldeo after his fight like a good mom.

A few more changes I'd make. Give a more thorough explanation to the fight with Kyurem. I'd get that it was some kind of initiation ceremony but, all the time, I kept thinking back to the Dex Entry and original game lore and wondered what changed here.

Next, fix up Keldeo's character arc. He goes from cocky and over-eager to scared shitless (okay makes sense) then goes from scared to brave. And he never gets reprimanded once for starting the fight, when he wasn't ready. This SHOULD logically have been a movie about a stupid kid getting knocked down a notch- only to become a better person because of his experience.

I want an episodic series about two idiots that get shit done but get their asses beat in the process. Preferably with good character animation and lots of lively battles. I don't care if the main characters WIN their battles as long as they're fun to watch and lots of different Pokémon appear.

Yeah, there's a reason Brock/Misty/Cilan/etc were heavily nerfed in the anime, and it wasn't just to make Ash look good. If Ash had an unnerfed gym leader following him around, what stakes would there be? They would have demolished villains whenever they showed up with elite gym pokemon. They would have pacified the weaker legendaries with the raw power and influence a gym leader has at their disposal.
Even though the way the Ash anime handled it was awful(not giving ANY justification for the gym leaders being so weak) it was still ultimately an improvement over having an all powerful bodyguard like Friede swooping in.
Horizons is so close to being perfect, they just have to take Friede out of the picture, much like Frodo and Sam split off from the rest of the fellowship of the ring.

Am I misremembering? Liko didn't have trouble communicating, she just wasn't assertive. How can you expect for them to pull their own weight when they sit on the sidelines while Cap and Friede do all the heavy lifting. They're going after the shiny Rayquaza for goodness sake. Hoopa Movie was mediocre. They never give a proper explanation for things like. What was Hoopa's beef with his 'shadow?' Why is Hoopa more powerful than the Gods of Sea, Ground, Time and Reality that he could command them. Or why Latias/os Mega Evolved despite barely knowing Ash. Or why Palkia, a God of Reality could not stop a vortex of reality destruction in the final forced third act. Not sure about Hoopa's story arc either. It seems, rather than learning about the importance of family, he should have learnt not to be an arrogant shit. Or maybe he had a Stitch-like arc where a found family tames and brings out the best of him?

If we were to consider these movies as a representation of a series, XY Ash does not come off as impressive. Spends most of the movie running from danger rather than using his Pokemon. And he only starts to confront the danger when gifted with three legendaries. Course, that brings up the problems raised above.

Still it's alright as a dumb action movie. The Big Legendary Fight setpiece was what I expected. Though I'm not sure why they chose Hoopa and the year 2015 to make such a movie.

Surprisingly no Amour. I went into this movie expecting at least one scene of Serena obsessing over Ash.

As a reminder, canon game Serena is 16/7. How many Amour fans would there be if Serena was almost 6 years Ash's elder.

On another note, this is probably the fourth movie I have seen- after Lucario, Victini and Keldeo, which is about Ash bonding with the legendary/mythical of the movie and helping them get over their problems. It really goes to show one of the major problems with Pokemon movies- they just kept recycling plots, sometimes with increasingly less impact. Consider how well-received Lucario is. Now who remembers the Victini Movie? No wonder the series faced declining box office return. They were once bold, but then they decided to play it safe.

The anime could use the "Kiss" as the catalyst for Serena's change in behavior around Ash. Since she kissed Ash on the lip, she will no longer feel any fear & submissiveness around Ash because there is nothing to hide anymore and completely open with her feeling now, Now she will be at the level where she can be sassy around Ash but also openly hugs him like Maylu & Lan whenever she gets the chance.

Moot's defense is flimsy. Pikachu bailing out Ash was lame, but at least Ash & Pikachu were the primary heroes of the series. Friede and Pikachu are 'complete', they aren't the main characters and they aren't aiming to do anything but babysit, so seeing them solve every trouble in the show makes the show feel like it isn't going anywhere.

Horizons is a fuckin' paradox. It both asks the viewer to ACTUALLY take the villains seriously, but also has more babysitters and saviors to rescue the heroes from any threat than ever before. Hell, characters will end an episode in danger, and be safe at the beginning of the next episode. It's dishonest.

But I get it. Moot, you hitched your wagon to this series, and you have to stand by it no matter what. Your obsession with Liko aside, you can't have people falling out of love with this series because it would mean less clout, less views for your GREAT podcast, and less people to deceive into thinking you're some kind of insider. So by all means, defend away. It'd be cruel to take the only thing you have.

Does Volcanion deserve the dubious distinction of being "that movie which killed the original continuity?"

Yes and no. On the one hand, it is far from the worst Pokemon movie, not saying much given how bad they got. It's just more of the same, a very average, predictable Pokemon movie- kind of like the average Ashnime episode. More on that later. The rest of the cast also get to do something rather than leave it to Ash- improvement upon the BW movies I watched. The action was okay and expected of the XY era.

On the other hand, it was the flop that killed the original tv-linked continuity. Part of the reason could be that it bought nothing new to the table. It is a very average, predictable Pokemon movie- and maybe that was the problem with the Ashnime era movies. There is yet another evil scientist (Butler, Z), a trope used so often in Pokemon that the """"twist"""" could be seen from a mile away, there's some minor villain Pokemon Hunters, implicit reference to Pokemon abuse (how many Fire types does Ash own who are like this?) and of course- not one but TWO copout Legendary deaths (see Victini and Darkrai). The secret tech, a floating castle, just ain't that impressive since they already did that in the Victini movies and we've seen so many flying contraptions- though maybe the secret weapon was the beam cannon. If you've seen enough of these mass produced movies, it is easy to end up exhausted. You've seen one, you've effectively seen them all.

I also don't understand why this movie was made. It seems to be a showcase for Mega Evos- something which was already being done at the time- and being done better, by the Mega Evo Specials. The movie even opens with Korrina v Alain. It's also funny that this movie makes such a big deal out of Mega Evo lore (only possible with friendship) when it follows on from Hoopa- where the Latis mega evolved despite not knowing Ash.

I have, always wondered about the disparity in reception between the XY-era TV and the XY-era movies. Given how 'cool' and well-received the XY Ash was- why didn't that success rub off on the movies? It is still the same Ash. Having watched this movie I think I can provide a diagnosis. The XY era stuck to the same formula. And no-one was willing to watch more of the same. Not the same old Pokemon movie with the same tired old tropes. Let's call it Pokemon Movie Fatigue.

Course, they were still willing to watch- if it came with the promise that their childhood hero could win.

Which brings us to the TV Series. This movie had an evil scientist (Jarvis) manipulating someone. Sound familiar? Replace the Prince with Alain, replace Jarvis with Lysandre. I do not know if the TV writing room was sharing notes with the Movie writing room, but this unhappy coincidence does lead me to further question the decisions made during XY. Why did Yajima and co think Ash beating the villain would garner interests when that is something that goes without saying (unless that villain group is TRHQ) in both the movies and TVs.

What made them think there would be much care given to how some OC feels about being played like a fiddle rather than the catharsis over, at that point, 20 years of frustration? And surely, they'd have noticed the similarities, the reception to Volcanion and at that point- alarm bells ought have rung. No-one really cares if Ash beats the bad guy- again. He always does that. If you wanted to be subversive, there was but one thing left to do at this point- and they were building towards it.

But, in the end, this is all conjecture and musing with hindsight. The Movies were probably being written and animated at the same time as the finale- meaning that even if they wanted to, at some point it was too late to course correct. Hence, it fell on Tomiyasu to give the fans what they wanted- for better or worse.

Now I didn't watch all these Pokemon movies, there were a few I skipped, but probably not gonna go back and watch them. And after what I've seen, I'm not thrilled to do so.

I really am just done with Ash. When I mean done, I don't want to watch other episode with him in it or another one of his movies- especially if this was what they could put up post-OG.

The XY era Ashnime movies were just glorified extended episodes. There was no reason to go see them. They had a chance to change things with the reboot movies ( 20th anniversary, Pokemon Go brought a lot of older fans back). But they fucked it up by doing a half-assed Kanto greatest hits, replace OS characters with OCs. Granted, movie 20 did well. But they could have made much more if they did Evangelion did and use the movies to cover a reboot Indigo series.

Looking back, some praise ought be given to Yajima for trying something different when the reins were handed to him. He tried to refresh the formula by making movies less about Ash and more about the people around him- with Ash's only purpose being to show up for some fight scenes and be the catalyst for others to become the best they can be. It was something done in the past, but mostly with Pokemon characters. Course, it seems by that point the rot had set in and it was too late to reverse the decline.

Remains to be seen if a RikoRoy era or Gen 10, Ashless movie can revive the Movie franchise forture.

...Though I still feel M21 wasn't really an Ash movie, and ought have been better doing away with him completely.

The Volcanion movie is a fan favorite. What "killed the original continuity" was not the "poor reception" of that movie, but the fact that I Choose You was such a success. Yuyama was considering making an SM movie for 2017, the decision to drop TV series continuity movies had nothing to do with the Volcanion movie.

In terms of jobbing yes, but I just can't see where you're getting the rest from.
But I agree, the best path his character can take is being impaled to death and hung by Liko's Rayquaza, who would just be following orders, and hung as a trophy for the rest of the explorers to see.

I don't think fags understand just how successful these movies are as a whole. Funnily enough I feel that it's still too soon for them to evolve. They have very few Ws, and they really haven't explored either the potential of tactics in battle or character of these non-evolutions. If the writers need to use evolution as a crutch to get the Pokemon more involved in the story that's on them, but I digress. I concur in that I can't see the series going beyond 2025, if that. That's completely possible. Wouldn't be the 1st time a series has been extended for whatever reason, but unlike Liko and Roy, Ash's end goal of "becoming a Pokemon Master" was extremely vague, and had practically no limit to what Ash's adventure would entail, whereas if some new artifact or Pokemon was suddenly introduced near the end of the season that Liko and Roy needed to collect, then it'd feel rather tacked on just for the sake of extending the story.
