Contests were absolutely awesome and I was addicted to them in ORAS, I had a contest superstar Mawile. Did you guys know that if a Pokemon maxes out the hype with the crowd while having a mega stone equipped, they Mega Evolve on stage?
When I found out BDSP had online multiplayer contests, I was willing to forgive every sin the game had, imagine my face when I saw contents were effectively removed.

Part of the appeal of contests is that absolutely any Pokemon can become a contest star if the player is good enough, adding actual base stats would just make it so there's a whole new set of shitmons, with a fresh coat of paint.
The only thing that should limit a Pokemon's contest viability is its movepool, and even then, I think in an idealized contest world, they would make up moves specifically for contests.
