Unova as a whole mindbroke everyone for not kneeling to KANTOOOOOOO. Tepig just ended up as the scapegoat due to being the fire type and potentially overshadowing CHARIZARD.

Like half of unova's pokemon are just KANTOOOO reskins. I'm 99% sure the only reason they added convergent species was to retroactively justify the unova pokemon in the remakes

Unova was an unpopular generation (back in the day).

Tepig's final evolution was unattractive and was yet another Fire / Fighting type.

Chandelure is much more popular, and people would rather use it on their team instead.

Gamefreak pretty much figured that the other two starters were much more popular and thus focus the attention on those two instead.

As such it currently has the least amount of merch (for a first stage starter) on the online Japan Pokemon Center store (https://www.pokemoncenter-online.com/?main_page=product_list&character=P_POKABU)

It's so embarrassing how Gen 5 fanboys (fanboys, not fans) have a chip on their shoulder all because of some dumb Facebook memes from 12 years ago. Why are they still not able to get over that? Hell, we're at a point where it seems like Gen 3 fans forget that generation was ever polarizing despite that being common knowledge not long ago.

The fact that you think GameFreak higher ups even knew or cared about those memes really goes to show how out of touch (you) are with reality. Those memes were mostly western made and TPC and Gamefreak mainly pay attention to Japanese feedback

Out of nowhere? Wouldn't that level of nostalgiabait make more sense to save for SM, the literal 20th Anniversary games that were already planned around the time XY was ready to go gold due to the Pokemon dev cycle?

No other game beforehand saw it necessary to give you a selection from a SECOND set of starters extremely early in the campaign, nor did any other game beforehand see it necessary to copypaste a map from Kanto in a region that has nothing to do with Kanto.

yeah because no other game beforehand added dozens of form changes for old Pokemon, which includes starters. What's your point?

lol, Gen 5's dex was unpopular in Japan. They had to resort to shilling Eevee and Lucario in late BW because none of their designated shillmons got popular. Even in this chart, Unova is at the bottom with 5.

I can't begin to tell you how many people I knew dropped their starter and went with Riolu or Eevee as their starter in BW2, it's both hilarious and sad how bad the shillmons/starters failed that gen.
