In Diamond and Pearl your first rival fight is after you've gotten poke balls instead of being a starter vs starter tutorial. Why did they never do this again?

That's only in Platinum, in DP you don't battle him until Jubilife

Well, it was probably an oversight, considering that isn't how it is in Platinum. Either that or someone misunderstood the intention to try something slightly different.
