Let's say the Axis Powers won WWII. For some reason, Pokémon is still released in 1996. How are the games different? What is the franchise like in 2023?

Realistically, even if a game called Pocket Monsters came out it would be fundamentally different since Pokemon's very individualistic and promotes a fantasy of owning many different items (or monsters, in this case). Under the Imperial Japanese the game would more likely be about leading Pokemon in battle to win a great war in the name of your enlightened leaders, so probably more akin to Pokemon Conquest.

Couldn't disagree more.
If you think Imperial Japan would still be promoting that type of behaviour in pokemon some 50+ years after the second world war you're wrong.
Video games are pure decadent wastes of time, their existence proves that people like young Satoshi Tajiri would still enjoy catching and collecting bugs and other flights of fancy that don't serve the immediate needs of the Empire.

If it won WW2 then it would have absolutely zero reason to democratize. Kids have been kids under every regime on earth, that part wouldn't change, but I don't think the aesthetic values of the Empire would change much over 50 years.

The end of the Meiji restoration to WW2 is a similar amount of time from the end of WW2 to the release of pokemon.
