Why do people think the Kalos league was tougher than the Alola league? in the end, in both leagues only the top 4 were powerful trainers

Also no one invalidates Red's victory in the pokémon league in Pokémon Special despite it being a small tournament with no badge requirement either

Every single trainer in the Kalos League was strong enough to beat 8 Kalos Gyms. In the Alola League there were 5 trainers at most that would've been able to do that.

Things were a bit different in the manga. Gathering the 8 gym badges was actually a bigger achievement than winning the League.

Not all gym leaders were strong though. Sawyer explicitely states he avoided strong leaders to fight only the weak ones and get badges faster, which seems to be the case for pretty much everyone except Ash (the leaders defeated by Ash are usually stated to be the strongest in their regions)
