Eh, not really. Linearity and a lack of free exploration did more damage to pokemon as you can see with gen 6 to 8 whole the games with either a non linear progression or a lot of optional areas tend to be vastly superior

If the design philosophy was adjusted to make it as easy as possible for the sake of small children, how did we then end up in the position of having an aimless, open world nightmare. I'm starting to doubt that even Masuda believes the things he's saying.

It would work for a game without a set narrative. Chat AI with no prescripted text except player input options would be great in an open world game. When you're trying to tell a story though it sucks, you have to neuter dialogue to account for multiple possible encounter orders.
