Hi /padt/. I'm writing some fanfics and could use your input on how Ash might react in a handful of situations. None of them will be in the fic itself, I just want to get a beat on how Ash operates. Yes, I already know Ash isn't smart. I just want a rough idea how bad it is and in what shape it takes form.
Missing and/or false information may be provided. For some additional context, the various bad guys are more thorough in these scenarios, not playing as nice as they did in the anime, although it's not "I'm gonna slit your throat if you defy me" edgy. Ash doesn't need to fear for his life, just some bruising for acting out, and the increased likelihood they'll steal his pokemon for pissing them off. In the past, Ash had police assistance during encounters.
>(Gen 3, the oldale ruins episode) Team Magma didn't let Ash keep his pokemon with him when team Magma took the people in the pokemon center hostage. They took Pikachu, then threw Ash, May, and Nurse Joy in the same locked room without any pokemon. Does he still try to escape through the vent?
>(Gen 4, Hunter J Episode) Ash was swiftly defeated by Hunter J, but instead of only taking Pikachu, she snatched each of his Pokeballs as well, taking Aipom, Staravia, and Turtwig. Does Ash still try to confront her unarmed, and sneak aboard the ship? If so, how does Ash react after he gets knocked out by Drapion and wakes up in a hospital with none of the Pokemon he had with him, being told that Hunter J got away?
>(Gen 8, the Hop battle episode) Instead of defeating Hop's Wooloo in one move, Wooloo survives the hit, and after a fierce battle where both trainers gave it their all, actually defeats Pikachu. Hop sighs and dismisses Ash as weak. Does this psyche Ash out before the tournament?

Oh, and since the newest anime hasn't reached us english speakers, I'm not including Liko in the stories yet.

I decided to do some schizo number work on the Nicolive ratings for Horizons. I'm not going to end up telling anyone here anything they don't already know, but it's nice to have it laid out with some visuals. I was wondering if the negative tenor Friday and Saturday mornings have taken on was at all reflected in the (subjective, but still useful) ratings we get from Japan.

The short answer is: Not really. Horizons is pretty consistent overall.
>The average rating is about 82.5; 83.3 if you discount the outlier dip the first two episodes received.
>The average for Pokemon Journeys at it's 28th week and 29th episode is about 79.
It is doing slightly better than the previous series so far, and it is not just do to simple variance.
>The standard deviation for Horizons ratings is 5.83; 3.62 without the first episode.
>Journeys' standard deviation is 5.95 at it's 28th week; 5.84 as of its 29th episode.
>They both have the same highest rating at 89.3.
>Horizon's lowest is 63.3.
>Journeys is 65.3.

N.B.: I couldn't find the ratings for weeks 11 or 23 after scouring the /a/ and /vp/ archives. Maybe I have the wrong search terms or something. Let me know if you have them, and I'll add them in.

Just a visual line graph showing the trend. So far it's upward, but the reality is aside from the first couple of hits, things have been consistently in the low-to-mid 80s, with some peak episodes here and there to offset the initial slump.

Here are two more line charts showing the trends vs. Journeys. The trends are up for both series, but Horizons is slightly higher. Journeys looks a lot more inconsistent, but it seems that the high and low swings mollified each others' impact on the average. I also just picked Yugioh from the current line up from a comparison, but admittedly, it's not a great one given that I couldn't find the ratings for all Nicolive shows prior to week 9. I thought it'd be interesting though, so I'll keep an eye on that one for comparison in the future.

I wish all readers were that attentive. Yes, that is partly why I would do such a thing. A punishment for Ash being reckless, of course, but more importantly a reason to break Ash out of the "ditch my pokemon every region" habit. But I can already tell that when I'd do such a thing, the reviews and replies would have some fanboys getting upset over Ash losing in a hopeless scenario that he put himself in. Completely missing that I'd be giving Ash a major boon in the process. Oh well, fuck them, their rage will act as publicity for me if I go there.

I was doing keyword searches for "Nicolive," "Niconico ratings," etc., on the archives, including "Nips/Japanese Have Spoken" since that was the subject for the /a/ threads that contained them. I was trying to find the weekly overalls especially to have comparisons, but I guess that ended up being much more work for less payoff in the long run. Either way, I appreciate it. I've added them in.

Work on the layout now, settle the continuity later. One of the bigger hurdles in a narrative is the coherency between relation and action sometimes. If a Pokemon trainer within the same series would fall back onto reserves or other outside means, it would break the continuity to discard it later down in order to preserve a higher sovereignty in character portrayal, either out of a philosophical win. Especially in a media like Pokemon.

Certain parts of Journeys resolve some major plot threads from SM. For the most part, you won't miss anything related to the overarching plot (Goh's capturing and Ash competing in the PWC), but they definitely put a lot of care into the Alola portions of Journeys.

One thing that gets me about people who hate SM is that many of them don't even seem to have given it a chance. They'd say it was bad or terrible but would refuse to elaborate, and in the rare instances they say more, they'd say things like "why watch everything of something you know is shit?" If a person watched most or all of SM and didn't like it I can understand it, I get why it's such a polarizing series. But many of its most vocal haters seem to have never give it a fair chance and just dismissed it because of the art or the tone shift instead of giving it a fair chance and deciding if it had redeeming factors or if it really just wasn't for them regardless.

I understand and sympathize with your point; it does get frustrating when people don't want to give the stuff you like a lot a chance. But we're also in a post-Ash age now, and most of the series die-hards for-and-against don't really matter. The legacy anime is something best picked apart for the stuff we like from it, and getting defensive about other people's tastes in that regard doesn't really lead to anything productive, because...well, Ash is dead, and he's not coming back.

I'm not even an SMfag, I prefer other series, it's just infuriating people seeing people criticizing SM while bragging that they either never watched it or dropped it early on. In fact I have seen multiple people bragging that they didn't watch the anime after XY ended and only came back for Horizons dismissing SM and Journeys as terrible without even watching them.

I think there's a difference between people who didn't even watch SM calling it shit, and people who watched from the start all the way until it ended and saying it's shit: the former didn't give it a chance, the latter did and decided it wasn't for them. Even the people who dislike BW and Journeys are generally people who did watch them and gave them a chance, it's SM who has largely gotten this treatment.

It's not like I don't get where they're coming from: the artstyle and tone changes were dramatic and I can see people not liking them at the time, me included. It's just that, if people are to dislike SM (or really any Pokemon season, and yes this includes Horizons and others), it would be more fair if they reach that opinion after watching at least a good amount of it and making an informed opinion instead of noping out just because they didn't like the tone shift and artstyle.

I liked most of the Project N arc. I think they could've borrowed more from his game personality, but overall they captured his enigmatism pretty well and the changes they made weren't too bad. The episode where he had Ash & co in the cabin in the mist was kino.

That one's hard. Takeshi Shudo obviously has a lot of scripts that are too soulful to ignore. His vision for the Pokemon anime was great, and the movies he wrote are easily three of the top five that the Pokemon anime has had. Atsuhiro Tomioka on the other hand has not only written the most screenplays, but he's the more senior after Shudo, having written from episode three to the finale. His work as series composer also brought us the stuff from Battle Frontier (informally), Diamond and Pearl, and XY. Hideki Sonoda co-wrote Movie 3 and all of the movies after up to Volcanion, but also wrote the occasional banger. Aya Matsui wrote some of the best one-off episodes in AG and DP, and did composition for SM. Those four are definitely in the top tier together, but which one is the best changes depending on the mood, I think. Tomioka's the best at writing battles while I think Matsui reigns supreme on SoL. Shudo is Shudo.

It's the 20th anniversary of Colosseum and I am still mad that they didn't included Shadow Pokemon. They made PoGo-based elements in the anime and Shadow Pokemon are an actual thing in PoGo, Goh could've dealt with that.

Ok Anons. I wanna share my thoughts on the latest episode. So here it goes.

This was a filler episode. Karna the Poké Ball artisan held no valuable information of the Ancient Poké Ball, which also makes the previous episode filler in hindsight.

However the episode showcases Orla's character quite well for the little we got of it. The start alone shows how much the Volt Tacklers rely on her ability to repair pretty much anything and how it can be overbearing for Orla sometimes to be so depended on, though the way that everyone but Liko needed her assistance at the same time was pretty unnatural, and such circumstances definitely won't make a reoccurrence after this episode. Should of made the Volt Tackler's issues pop-up throughout the day or days, slowly wearing Orla out instead. Orla's masterful expertise of architectural work were further displayed throughout the episode, from her diagnoses, repair work, and efficiency of use on Karna's factory. Karna and Orla's relationship grew stronger throughout he episode, deepening further when they both realized they share the same ideal to make Pokémon's environments to be as comfortable as possible. It also gave us a glimpse into Orla's past, and how her life changed when Friede made an appearance in it, with her interactions with Friede molding a strong trust in Friede and his seemingly ridiculous plans he has in mind.

Frankly though Orla's spotlight was to be shared with Roy, who's been really fascinated by the aspect of throwing Poké Balls, which has lead to multiple problems throughout the episode. who has demonstrated multiple times within this episode to be a hard headed boy who doesn't adhere to warnings of those that have his well-being in mind. In made a holes in the wall of the airship multiple times despite being warned about the potential dangers that can lead to after the 1st time.

Although seeing Roy using the different Poké Balls was fun, one of the balls he used was the Chase Ball, a ball he read the note for before use, knowing that it'll try and catch the nearest wild Pokémon nearby, and throws it anyways despite being warned that there are dangerous Pokémon nearby. The fault can also land at Karna's feet as well, but the whole Galarian Weezing fiasco wouldn't of happened if not for Roy's carelessness. I'm assuming that this will be addressed sometime down the road as he did something similar before, so we'll have to wait for the payoff of this character flaw getting resolved. Also I wonder if there will be anything to Roy's autistic focus on throwing Poké Balls. Will he become another Goh, capturing Pokémon with ease? Maybe just be able to throw them further and more accurately? Or just a fun trait the writer simply like to play with and nothing more? Who can say.

Liko served to established the conflict of Orla potentially leaving the Volt Tacklers. Now if this was the writers' attempt to persuade the audience that this was a possibility, then that endeavor landed flat on its face. Orla's "grievances" (if you can call it that) with the Volt Tacklers were never really shown to light until this episode. Otherwise she usually has a smile plastered on her face even when doing the odd jobs on the ship, and Orla's connection with Karna only begun within the episode. It wasn't like they were close friends or even acquaintances before then. This could of also simply be Liko really overthinking things and assuming the worse, even if it's illogical, it is in character. I wonder if this will be further explored, and even minimized later in the series, though Liko not self-reflecting on how ridiculous the notion in her head that Orla could leave was doesn't give me confidence for such discoveries for now. Even then Liko's worries were so apparent that it caught Orla's attention, leading to Liko asking about Orla's past, so that's a plus.

The Galarian Weezing Incident, caused by Roy, leaves a rather sour taste in my mouth. It was understandable how Liko and Roy got rolled over with ease given the Weezing's evolution and level advantage over our protagonist's starter Pokémon, and a type advantage over Sprigatito, but the way how Cap overshadowed the efforts of Metagross by taking out many Weezings with a single Thunderbolt was rather uncalled for. This episode was suppose to be Orla's time in the Sun. Should of at least let Metagross have taken out a portion of the Weezings before doing that so it wouldn't make Metagross and Orla look so overwhelmed by simply looking at the sheer number of Weezing advancing towards them. Really getting sick of the Cap worship in the show, and though Orla was the one to solve the dilemma through an ingenious method, the writers made sure that most of the credit was given to Friede who came up with the idea, which doesn't help lessen my worries about how the writers treat Friede and Cap as plot devices that fix everything in the end. Hopefully they divert from this trend sooner or later. Also one of these days Liko and Roy will have to acknowledge that they need to get into gear when it comes to getting stronger, and hopefully soon.

The episode ends with Orla answering Liko's question that she travels on the Asagi to do things she never has done, and she assumes rightly that's also why Liko travels along with them as well, which Liko thoughtfully confirms. Soon after everyone else once again are having issues that only Orla can fix, but this time she takes it much better than she did earlier, ending the episode on a sweet note.

There were some small things that I've noticed in the episode: I like how Elekid was impersonating Orla's gait outside the factory. Shows how much of a positive effect and influence Orla has on her Elekid. And see that Metagross been with Orla since its previous evolutions, I wonder if we'll get more of a look of her past life with her Pokémon.

Sprigatito within this episode, and honestly throughout the series, usually reacts to Liko's antics of acting weird, being indecisive, or being really deep in her own thoughts with either confusion, worry, or amusement, like how Sprigatito reacted when Liko got second thoughts on what she'll say when attempting a capture. Could be me overthinking things and this simply be the writers' just making a gag between the two, but it could lead to deeper development between the two.

The argument between the Volt Tacklers about the ordeal with Orla went rather childishly, with it devolving into name blaming each other, which maybe was comedic for some, lost out on some potentially interesting character interactions between them. I know some would consider this taboo, but I have an idea on how it should of went. The starts the same, but instead of blaming one another, they each note how they themselves may have caused the issues by their own doing, with some light jabs thrown by one or both of the Volt Tacklers at the self-blamer. And it ends with Friede half-jokingly saying that if the issues really start getting to Orla, maybe he'll try learning a thing or to about fixing stuff. I mean that's just my idea, but I think this would be more interesting.

Overall the episode was just ok or meh for a Pokémon episode, nothing epic happened, but though it had some issues throughout it, it gave us some insight of one of the Volt Tacklers Orla, which I welcome more of this type of episode, and I'm sure many enjoyed it for what it is.

Holy effort post. Although two things to note in that. Roy's throwing skills was present from the moment he made his debut. They just combined it again as an way with the prototype pokeballs. One episode in the future could about a small competition or the sorts where his aim gets put to the test.

Or writing a collision of personalities causing a slight rift after Roy getting duped one too many times.

There a fair amount of ways a conflict could even be written on a arc-length duration for character progression.

What's the problem exactly?

If your Tera Orb is uncharged, you touch a Tera Crystal or whatever, to charge it full of Tera energy.

If Friede already charged his Tera Orb back back when he was in Paldea, that means he has one Terastal charge available to use, which we saw that he used in Galar.

There's no rule that says charged Tera Orbs can't be used outside of Paldea. They simply need to be charged with energy, and this energy can only be obtained in places with Tera Crystals.

That's not how its work as official website confirmed that Terastalization is possible on Paldea because of Terastal energy emitting from Paldean soil. It doesn't not work on Galar that has no Terastal energy.

Haven't you read Serebii's preview? Blueberry Academy has a special glode that makes it possible for them use Terastalization on the academy which is not the same case with Galar.
