Steamboat Willie's copyright expiring doesn't mean Mickey Mouse will become a public domain character. It just means Steamboat Willie can be distributed freely.

Even if everything about Pokemon Red and Green (and subsequent media) becomes public domain, it'll be so unrecognizably far removed from what Pokemon will be in the 2090's that none of Pokemon's owners will care and neither will the consumers of that era.
The Pikachu, Eevee, Charizard, Gengar, Mewtwo and so forth of the first generation are not the same as the ones we see in the current day, having had careful design tweaks over the years that serve to renew and stabilize those Pokemon in ways that allow them to gather new fans while keeping old ones to the best of their ability, ensuring their most recent versions are the ones the common consumer will think about, unable to be replicated by anyone else that may one day seek to utilize the public domain table scraps.
Those public domain opportunists will have no choice but to stick to the visuals Red and Green's era, and by the time the 2090's rolls in, I highly doubt there will be a market for such a bygone era of Pokemon when virtually everyone who was originally there for it will be long dead or senile.

Actually, they've been slightly altering Charizard's design every so often ever since the jump to 3D. Its model got tweaked for LGPE to be suitable for Switch, then it got refined in SWSH, and was notably changed yet again in SV to be compliant with the new model standards of that game.

I've playing star rail and it's insane compared to Sw/Sh and SV.
The loading time are instant, animations unique to every character, flashy moves, every menu is fast and responsive, almost everything is voice acted, the graphics are like two console gens above. On my mid tier phone at a stable 30 fps, or 60fps if I don't mind battery usage.
Sure it has issues like gacha but technically it's crazy how much of a different experience it is between a chink mobile phone and a switch game of the biggest grossing media franchise in the world. It's embarassing.

Over covid, there was queues out the arse for new merch launches, even with the health crisis going on. they are an expected, rather than a bonus sale, because Japan's still fucking obsessed with the pissing thing. This is also why Pokemon is hellbent on churning out new monsters constantly that they're slipping them into games every chance they get, with every three years marking a new gen and thus the largest batch of new monsters. Pokemon is devoted to ensuring every single generation of kids in Japan has a chance to become a consumer generation by making sure they all get to have "their era" of Pokemon.

So, assuming we get a new generation every 3-4 years without fail because TPCi is going to ensure Game Freak wishes they never had this happen to them, that means by 2123 (100 years from now) we'll between the 32nd and nearly 42nd generation of Pokemon. And assuming The Ride Never Ends, we'll be at generation 100 between the year 2295 and 2386.

The true questions to ask then are what will pokemon/shillmons even look like by then, if Pikachu will still be the master or replaced with a new face, if Zard will continue to be propped up by gimmicks while still dying the sneaky pebbles, and if /vp/ will even still exist by then to still shitpost about the series?
