Applin’s can be a tongue in cheek reference to Dipplin’s evolution becoming Bug later. But it could also be a reference to how Carmine’s team are weak to Bug and included for design purposes. I am more likely to believe the former as Carmine2 occurs long after you clear Apple Hill and Kieran2 does not have any Pokémon weak to Bug nor Pokémon that Applin can capitalize on.
And speaking of Poltchageist, it could be a tea reference like how Applin is a worm and not designed for the immediate bosses in the area.
