Yeah but its not making it to the hall of fame, surely. Its useful for that gym but probably gets discarded later, like the Monkies. I always thought the Muppet duo were unpopular even among Unova mons.
Something from the desert or Chandelure seem more generic on Unova hall of fame teams.

I used Throh on my last replay of white, and it was pretty solid. Gave it bulk up and would sweep when needed. i never used sawk or throh before that because I thought they were ugly, but now I have a slightly better view on them. But I agree, that it is a questionable pick for a generic team.

A swampert player will almost always take breloom, but sceptile and Blaziken players almost never will.

This, it’s more a matter of Staraptor, Luxray, Lucario and Garchomp (in platinum) being Nidoking syndrome mons

The games have options, but why would you NOT use the super cool, super powerful mons that are very easy to obtain? Most people will instinctively want to use them at least once.
It’s still fun to try and make up teams for each region though. Hell, game freak did that themselves to an extent with the Red battle. Yellow is probably the easiest one to do since most people will have Pikachu and the 3 starters

Exactly, it's not necessarily a problem imo. Some pokemon are just more popular than others and Sinnoh happens to put a bunch of them early on.
The only types with bad availability are Fire, Electric and Dragon (that last one is true for every pre Gen 5 game), the others are honestly fine

Topius is the GOAT DPPt Hm slave because he syncs perfectly with Bibarrel,
Tropius gets fly, defog.
Bibarrel gets, Surf, Waterfall, Whirlpool for HGSS.
And you can split cut, strength, and rock smash between them.
The only other move is flash but that's literally only in one cave.

Scizor in Crystal was traded over from the Red save and evolved
Lotad was traded from Emerald to Leafgreen

A lot of these teams I think are subject to starter just like Blue/Barry. For example the Kanto one I'd say Arcanine and Ninetales (depending on version) are among the most used out of all non-Charizard teams

That doesn't really work for BDSP since you can just fill your team with Underground mons. Only common mons I used were starter and Garchomp.

I've never used any of those. My first playthrough of Pearl was Torterra, Pachirisu, Blissey, Gastrodon, Roserade, and Lopunny. Playing Shining Pearl now and I've got Empoleon, Lickilicky (found Lickitung in the underground), Misdreavus, Shieldon, and Roselia so far.

Hoenn has way too many good picks to be using the same stuff every run (starters excluded because they're all great). Before you even get to the 2nd gym you have your choices of:

Howl Poochyena (I got a shiny and used it the whole run)
Pick-up Zigzagoon army
Beautifly or Dustox status spreaders
Lombre or Nuzleaf
Taillow or PEEEEEKOOOO
Ralts, which needs to be babied but gets Confusion for Brawley and Zubats
Nincada -> Ninjask/Shedinja
Slakoth (shines later on)
Everything in Granite Cave, especially Makuhita, Aron, Sableye

All before the 2nd gym, didn't even include everything you can encounter. Plenty to keep you busy until later when you can get Swablu, Duskull, Spheal, Claydol, Absol, etc.

Used Sawk since it was with the version I had, plus even looking at the design when I was younger (and knew nothing about the new Unova pokes back then) I knew Throh would be defensively-oriented, largely bulk with weird fighting moves like what Circle Throw would show itself to be.
They deserved to be meme'd on for being Bert/Ernie-ass muppets, but they're very fun to slot in if they're distributed just right, as BW1 did.
