This would not be the first time Pokemon had a lopsided evolutionary chain (Male Combee and Male Salandit), but the case of the apple dragons feels stranger and less "justified" compared to the last two examples.
Guess the difference is that Dipplin is explicitly mentioned to be a species consisting of two wyrms coexisting within the apple, while Appletun and Flapple are only one each. The wyrm that was Applin evolved with its chosen apple to become the sweet pie and tart core... still hoping that Appletun and Flapple receive "something".
