XY asks if you're a boy or a girl and THEN asks which style you'd prefer, but Alola onward found it easier to just ask "which style do you prefer" on one screen while showing you all eight character options
There's nothing about pandering here despite TPCi's attempt to make it seem so. Picking the boy still means characters refer to you as a boy, and picking the girl still means characters refer to you as a girl. There's no "they/them" shit or customizable pronouns, it's just simplifying the age-old procedure to remain a one-screen affair to avoid overwhelming kids with too many branching variables.
