Carmine didn't want to tell Kieran about meeting Ogerpon cause she thinks he's too obsessed with and would sperg out too hard. He constantly went to the cave alone at night despite all the warnings (the villagers thought it was very dangerous) and kept doing it even though it got him into trouble. So she forces you to not tell him. But Kieran notices that Carmine keeps talking to you behind his back, so he gets jealous as fuck and fucks off.
Their grandpa then tells you and Carmine the true story about Ogerpon: It came to Kitakami a long time ago, together with a stranger. People didn't accept the two for being foreign, so the mask maker (Kieran's and Carmine's ancestor) made the masks, using Tera crystals that the stranger brought with them and embedding them into the masks. This way, the two could mingle in the crowd during the annual mask festival.
But the "Loyal Three" came to Kitakami and were very interested in those Tera masks. They overwhelmed the stranger in the cave they were squatting it and stole them (the implication is that they killed him in cold blood). Ogerpon returns, finding their home completely destroyed from the fight (and probably her trainer's corpse). In a desperate frenzy, she finds the Three and literally clubs them to death.
The villagers only witnessed the last part and didn't know anything about what happened before that, so all they saw was Ogerpon fighting the Three to the death, then fucking off into the mountains. So they thought she was evil and the "Loyal Three" tried to protect the village, sacrificing their lives to do so.
Kieran's family were the only people who knew this story, but for some reason Carmine and Kieran were never told it.
Anyway, Kieran didn't actually fuck off and eavesdropped the whole thing. Both Carmine and their own grandpa tell us to not tell Kieran, which is obviously a huge betrayal in Kieran's eyes and the beginning of his mindbreak.
