This is confirmed in HGSS. If you take Charizard, Pikachu or Snorlax near Red on Mt. Silver, and talk to them, they will have a special reaction.

Replace Sudowoodo and Hitmontop with Scizor and Dragonite. His canon team should include a shiny, an eggmon and both new types - all features introduced in gen 2 - and you're good on all of those except a steel type. I'd say that a steel type is more important than the "canon" of Ethan exploring the ass end of the giant cave you get the hitmontop in.

Getting an extremespeed Dratini is just as canon as capturing the Sudowoodo when you battle it.\

Otherwise looks great. I've always imagined it the same.
