If there was any other line of ghost pokemon in the first 2 generations, or if it wasn’t the first pokemon in the face of every kid every single time the game started up it would be massively less popular.
But that isn’t the case, and of course now it’s one of the biggest shillmon out there, up with Pikachu, Ch*r*z*rd and Lucario.

I’ll agree with the other people itt that Haunter is a much cooler design.

I agree with this to a degree though. Its looked a lot better black/darker purple. I still love Gengar but it definitely doesn't look as cool as it used to.

Zoroark was pushed very hard but it didn't stick.

What's funny is that the anime kept the classic Gengar colors even into Journeys, right up until Ash's Gengar appeared. But he was the only Gengar we saw since then so it looks more like Ash caught some weird off-color Gengar.

I will shit on gen 1 mons for the exact same reason but I completely disagree. It's a memorable design. There's a reason no one remembers something like voltorb or similarly basic designs

i know its fake but i can't help but wonder why they didn't increase the size of the knuckles because all this does is make it look like their thumb got stung by a bee.
there's not enough finger behind the switch for this to work from an anatomic point of view because at that size the hand wouldn't be flexible enough.
not to mention the switch is fucking massive when in most people's hands joycons look like pathetic little toys. that'd have to be the world's biggest joycon or the world's fattest 2 year old.

Because Gengar was the only fully evolved Ghost type in the first game, and Misdreavus which was an awful shitmon at the time was its only competition during Pokemania.
Gengar also has a “cool, slick” design that appeals to a lot of people.

I wish Gengar and its kin learned more Posion moves via level up. They slapped the Poison type on it due to it being based on gas much like Koffing, but they never really expanded on that characteristic.
