Area Zero seems pretty clearly inspired by it, especially visually but also slightly thematically. Basically, things get more fucked up the deeper it goes, it's full of fucked up monsters, and many explorers lost their lives trying to reveal its secrets.

Yeah exactly. There's some parallels but MiA certainly didn't invent it. As I said, I think it definitely took visual inspiration though, the geography and lighting of the first layers are near identical.
