Nah, you're misremembering. The guy was old and lonely as fuck, outlived his wife, so he wanted a little friend someone his age could handle, hence why it needed to be level 1-5.
Once you enter the Hall of Fame and return you find out he's dead, having left a parting note expressing his gratitude, the Poke Ball containing the Pokemon you gave him (now with max affection, assuming Amie's been used at all prior) and a Comet Shard.
