I'll say it's because when you're that big of a fan of something, you conflate that with objective quality and become both unable and unwilling to imagine anything better that's substantially distinct
why bother making your own game when you'd just be reinventing Pokemon
it takes a long time of thought, personal self-reflection, and prolonged criticism to reach the point where you actually have a vision of *your* ideal monster catching game that makes Pokemon unsatisfactory or downright intolerable
that's the only way you'll be able to break out of the fangame and tribute paradigm, and feel free to forge your own path
