Platinum has been viewed by the near entirety of the pokemon fanbase as one of the best games in the franchise up until recently when there's been memetic shitposting against it.
Sales have nothing to do with quality or even popularity within the community, they're mostly impacted by the prevalence of piracy at a given time, and things like console sales. The GB, GBC and GBA sold mostly because of pokemon, the DS sold because of many games including but not limited to pokemon because it was aimed at a far wider audience.
