Most gen 5 romhackers use BW instead, and even then, there isn't much interest in anything not gen 3 (FRLG).

Too much work when autists get more features out of gen 3. They get everything except animated sprites and the hassle of figuring out how to use the second screen

Decomp rom hacks mean you can edit the game’s source code. Radical Red is based on the decomp of FireRed which is how they straight up add new gameplay mechanics and add new Pokémon to the dex, instead of having to replace existing ones. I remember seeing one person make a Legend of Zelda game using decomped gen 3. The sprite was link and had the ability to use stuff like bombs from the bag.

I don’t think it’s been decomped yet. The first gen 4 decomp just came out this year.

no decomp, lack of user-friendly tools and lack of documentation
trying to edit existing scripts is a nightmare and a half due to how prone the game is to completely shitting itself the moment you have either more or less bytes than the original script file
