Seems this is the metric that guy used.

Design complexity as a whole is not 100% objective, you're never going to get a perfect result case by case. It also depends on which picture you're going to use for the exercise. But I guess in the grand scheme you can find trends. I mean it's no secret that stronger pokémon have more complex designs, regardless of a little statistic noise. I'd like this to be repeated with something more standardized like those HOME sprites

There are just as many shitmons with complex designs as there are powerful ones.

Obviously you'll never get the objective results but did the guy not see that his model puts things like Ultra Necrozma at the same complexity level as Azurill because they technically both have only one color.
The results have to also make sense to a human who understands complexity as a multi-parameter concept.

Image entropy is more complex than just counting colors. Eternatus has literally two and is still in the far upper right corner. But you're probably right, Ultra Necrozma shouldn't be there. I think the guy who made the chart fucked up because he mixed gen 7 and 8 sprites and dexited forms' sprites are too pixelized to be useful.

If you believe overdesign can be quantified, you literally have OP's image. If you accept the unquantifiable nature of design, you literally just have to look side to side an image with every legendary pokémon and another with every baby, unevolved early bug etc. But being a contrarian and looking like a retard in the process is too tempting

I don't pretend to understand image entropy but I can tell that Mega Salamence ends up super low because its official art, which is what was probably used, is a massive solid red crescent.
I don't think a better model would reverse the trend but I don't think this model has has properly quantified "complexity".
