Basically Tajiri gave up halfway in development of GS because the game (leaked beta) was going nowhere. Masuda took over, scrapped the idea of making a Japan region and created Johto as we know it.

I unironically apologize to Masuda. GSC are beautiful games. I wonder how it must have felt seeing his creation reimagined on the DS. Reminder that Masuda did all of the battle themes for GSC except Kanto Trainer Battle and Kanto Gym Leader Battle, as well as all the Johto route themes except Route 26, and New Bark Town and Cherrygrove City. It must have been an extraordinary sight.

I made a mistake in my post. Masuda actually did do the Kanto Gym Leader Battle theme. The only ones he didn't do were the Kanto Trainer Battle and Kanto Wild Pokémon Battle.

This was before his Jokerization after Gen 5 (his magnum opus) underperformed for Pokemon standards, leading to the era of Kanto pandering we're still in today.

It introduced the most egregious form of it that's still stuck around to this day. The Unovadex reused concepts from Kanto's dex for sure but used them as jumping-off points for more involved concepts rather than outright ports.

Unironically Masuda was the soul of the franchise. He left the most distinct creative mark on the series out of anyone, him dropping the franchise was the true death of Pokemon.

No shit he did director work.
He didn't completely direct the game, though, or Tajiri's credit would have been changed. I've seen interviews in English where he mentions that his sub director work was basically helming the end of GS when Tajiri stepped aside from overwork, it was an old Nintendo Power, but nothing more than that.
With what we know now about the dev cycle and the game being almost complete before getting almost totally scrapped, it's easy to think of it as a tale of two directors, but the similarity of the concepts and the final credits prove that Tajiri was responsible for the direction of both Pocket Monsters 2 and Pokemon Gold and Silver. Common sense, that.

And no, I'm not watching some YouTranny poorly translate interviews and take them out of context with no original source posted, and act like it's new information when it was always known.

Not saying I don't get why you guys wouldn't simply believe Dr Lava at face value, but you must admit this perfectly explains the sudden random shift in creative direction after the space world demo was scrapped. That space-world demo has WAAAAAY more in common with the creative direction of gen 1 then what we ended up getting, you cannot deny this. I can easily see Tajiri panicking trying to cram all of his ideas into one hugely ambitious sequel, before giving Masuda the creative reigns and him just going

This doesn't excuse the poor performance of the later games because I think that's separate from creative direction, but I'm just a layman.
