Things like them revamping the underground (in reality they just dumped all the Pt. encounters there instead of properly spreading them out on routes...like Pt. does, giving you access to powerful single stage mons like Absol right after Gardenia) or the 'stronger' E4 are undermined by things like cut online features, cut contests, cut base customization, no compatibility with SWSH/PLA, forced EXP share and friendship bonuses, etc.
...And this is just ignoring that there's nothing from Platinum in the game either, so no Looker, no Battle Frontier, no distortion world, etc. And the game adds nothing new to make up for this unless you're happy fighting the E4 over and over while getting cheese wins with friendship bonuses you can't turn off.
The game is horribly, deeply flawed in just about every way a Pokemon game can be, the fact that this such a common sentiment means by definition it's not hyperbolic, there's truth to the opinions people have.
