>>55033942I also like gen 3. Mainly for nostalgia reasons. As a kid. I only ever played Red and Emerald. Gen 3 was such an improvement graphics-wise over gen 1 and gen 2. Double Battles were interesting (yes, I know the GameCube games did it first.) and there was so much more stuff to do! Secret bases were really cool as well.
Decorating was the only thing "comfy" about gen 3 though. Over time I realized that the Hoenn region is a pain to travel through and IGN was right. On my original playthrough I found the final section of the game before the E4 to be a slog to get through.
While it was cool to see Battle Frontier for the first time gen 4 and especially gen 5 did it much better.
Another reason I like gen 3 is because of how easy it was for ROM hacks to be created. We have tools now for earlier and later generations, but even now you still see people putting current gen mechanics into gen 3 based games.
