I was always disappointed on how lame Hydreigon looked despite being ostensibly a Hydra (the stubby arms look pathetic), while Hydrapple just has enough edge to it while also being a more accurate representation of the concept.

Yeah, hydras are one body with multiple heads. Probably has this shape inside.
But yeah, love this thing. Instantly shot up to my favorite designed Gen 9 mon, and one of, if not my favorite Grass and or Dragon type. It's just a wonderful combination of cute and cool, and has nice a nice kit and numbers.

what kills hydreigon is the elbows, makes the other two heads read as hands instead of heads
if the idea was to make a hydra that looks like if it has multiple heads but only has one real head then they've kind of succeeded. I do like that the legs and wings look a bit like very simplified heads. But the overall result is a bit lacking.

Yeah, that’s the intent. The dex even mentions that the other heads lack brains. They’re functionally hands, and combined with the wings are meant to give the silhouette of having even more heads.

This was definitely the idea, the lore of the line is that when Deino's head splits into two, the two fight and fight until it evolves and the winner becomes Hydreigon and the loser becomes a puppet hand.

Hydrapple is based on the Hydra and possibly King Ghidorah from Godzilla. Fickle Beam strongly resemble Gravity Beam from the series too.

Hydrapple also draws from Ladon, Eden's serpent, other "serpent with plant" motifs that have existed since the bronze age, and the very earliest depictions of dragons as horned serpents (a concept that's popped up everywhere from the middle east to the Mississippi)

Alright let's get this out of the way. Hydreigon is not even based on a hydra. After the whole tank idea didn't go through, Ken Sugimori decided to make it based on Yamata No Orochi, an eight headed snake. The reason why it didn't have all 8 heads was because 1. it was off-putting and 2. it was during the DS era. If Hydreigon was made today, it would have easily have 8 heads.
